When you use Output current form to Word for a form that contains a repeating subsection, you may see an error message instead of your document, or the answer text may appear with incorrect formatting. Which of these happens depends on how the Word template positions each field's label and its data placeholder.
⚠️ Important: There isn't currently a way to avoid both issues at the same time. The workaround below prevents the error, but introduces a formatting limitation.
What is happening
There are two related issues, depending on how the label and its data placeholder are positioned in the Word template:
If the label and its placeholder are on separate lines, outputting to Word shows an error message instead of producing your document. The document is not generated.
If the label and its placeholder are on the same line, your document is generated, but the answer text takes on the label's formatting. For example, if the label is bold, the answer text will also appear bold. Any tab spacing between the label and the answer is also lost.
Who is affected
You may see this if you output a form containing a repeating subsection to Word, and the Word template used for that form places field labels and their data placeholders on separate lines, or on the same line.
Impact
If the label and placeholder are on separate lines, no Word document is produced. An error message is shown in its place. Your form data is not affected or lost.
If the label and placeholder are on the same line, a Word document is produced, but the answer text may appear in the wrong formatting, and spacing between the label and answer may not match the template.
Workaround
In the Word template, place each field's data placeholder on the same line as its label, rather than on a separate line.
📌 Note: This workaround avoids the error, but the formatting issue described above still applies. The answer text will take on the label's formatting.
Fix status
A fix has been developed for the error that occurs when the label and placeholder are on separate lines. A fix for the formatting issue that occurs when the label and placeholder are on the same line has been added to the backlog for further work.
