In this article, we explore what relationships are suggested in Mosaic and how those suggestions are derived.

When you're adding personal relationships from a person or group record, Mosaic can suggest possible relationships that you might want to add, based on the already existing relationships. These will appear in a second tab in the pop-up window for adding personal relationships.

These suggestions will only be created based on relationships where some of the people concerned are in a group together - see below for details.

The possible suggestions are:

Parent:Child

Where Person A and Person B have a relationship recorded that is set as a Partner:Partner type where:

  • Person A and Person B are in a group together.

  • Person A has a Parent:Child relationship type recorded with Person Z.

Then a Parent:Child relationship will be suggested between Person B and Person Z.

๐Ÿ“Œ Note: This does not take into account whether any of the children already have two parents or whether there are differing parents and a half-sibling relationship (see below) is suggested.

Child:Parent

Where Person C and Person D have a relationship recorded that is set as a Sibling:Sibling type where:

  • Person C and Person D are in a group together.

  • Person C has a Child:Parent relationship type with Person Y.

Then a Child:Parent relationship will be suggested between Person D and Person Y.

Sibling:Sibling

Where Person E and Person F have a relationship recorded that is set as a Parent:Child type where:

  • Person F and Person X are in a group together.

๐Ÿ“Œ Note: This is different to above.

  • Person E has a Parent:Child relationship with Person X.

Then a Sibling:Sibling relationship will be suggested between Person F and Person X.

Half-sibling:Half-sibling

Where:

  • Person G has a Child:Parent relationship type recorded with Person W and Person V.

  • Person H has a Child:Parent relationship type recorded with Person W and Person T.

  • Person G and Person H are in a group together.

Then a Half-sibling:Half-sibling relationship will be suggested between Person G and Person H.

Partner:Partner

Where:

  • Person Q has a Child:Parent relationship type recorded with Person J and Person K.

  • Person J and Person K are in a group together.

Then a Partner:Partner relationship will be suggested between Person J and Person K.

๐Ÿ“Œ Note: This does not take into account whether either of the parents already have partners.

Relationship types

It is important for the suggested relationship functionality, as well as genogram functionality, that relationship types are set up appropriately and only used for the exact relationship types stated. For example, a Sibling:Sibling relationship type must not be used for a Step-sibling or Half-sibling relationship - or a Parent:Child relationship should not be used for Step-parents.
