In some letters, when a field sits on the same line as fixed text, the word straight after the field can appear to touch or overlap the answer. For example, text can appear as "your care of TESTbut unfortunately" instead of "your care of TEST but unfortunately".
This is not an issue with Mosaic. It happens because of how Apache FOP, the third-party software Mosaic uses to produce your PDF letters, measures spacing when it lays out the text.
When you'll see this
You'll see this if both of the following are true:
The field sits on the same line as the surrounding fixed text.
The template has no space typed between the field and the next word.
đ Note: If there is a space (or non-breaking space) between the field and the next word, the same 1 mm is still lost. It swallows the space instead of causing an overlap, which is why some letters look fine while others show text merging together.
Why this happens
When Mosaic generates a letter, it adds a small gap after each answer. Letter body text is usually justified, and when Apache FOP - the third-party software that produces the final PDF - spreads out a justified line, it doesn't measure that gap correctly. This starts the next word about 1 mm too early, on top of the answer. This is a known issue in Apache FOP, not in Mosaic.
Workaround
You can prevent the overlap by adding 3 to 4 spaces to the beginning of the fixed text that follows the field.
Current status
There's currently no plan from Apache FOP to resolve this issue, so Access is looking at adding a workaround into a future version of Mosaic.
